Earlier today in the press there were publications that in answer to a deputy’s question the acting Minister of Defense Georgi Panayotov stated that within 6 to 8 months The United States will provide us with a binding offer, which will actually be a contract for 6 new F-16 aircraft.
“The caretaker government neither leads nor has authority to negotiate the purchase of eight new F-16 Block 70 fighters. The draft budget update 2021 does not envisage any costs for the purchase of new fighters. “- said in a statement from the press center of the Ministry of Defense.
In the statement nothing is said about Georgi Panayotov’s answer to the GERB MP Hristo Gajdev – author of the question whether the caretaker government is working on the acquisition of 8 more F-16 fighters. Such a deal would allow Bulgaria to have a squadron of combat-ready aircraft to guard its airspace and carry out missions with NATO allies.
Bulgaria must hurry with the conclusion of such a deal, as the United States plans to change the configuration of the F-16 Block 70 aircraft and it may turn out that the Bulgarian Air Force will operate fighters of different configurations.
