The Cabinet decided to establish a National Security Council

The Council of Ministers decided on the establishment of a National Security Council (NSC) on Wednesday, Government Spokesman Constantinos Letympiotis announced, noting that its mission will be to produce thoughts, ideas, suggestions and proposals with practical value in matters of national security.

In his statements after the session of the Council of Ministers, which was chaired by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, Mr. Letympiotis, stated that it was decided to establish and operate the National Security Council, noting that it is an advisory body, which was also in the pre-election program of the President of the Republic.

According to Mr. Letympiotis, this body will advise the President of the Republic and through him, the Council of Ministers on national security issues, including defense, foreign policy and the Cyprus issue and will analyze and plan the national security strategy which will approved by the Council of Ministers.

“The National Security Council will also inform the National Council through the President of the Republic on matters concerning the Cyprus issue and it is understood that the National Council will be able to ask the President of the Republic to commission the SEA to carry out a specific investigation or study that falls under the responsibilities and will submit it through the President of the Republic to the National Council”, he said.

The mission of the SEA, he added, will be to produce thoughts, ideas, suggestions and proposals of practical value on matters of national security. “He will have the ability to diagnose existing and foresee future needs in the field of his responsibilities and take care of assigning studies and research to elite scholars, researchers and experts after the assignment by the President of the Republic,” he added.

“We consider”, added Mr. Letymiotis, “that through the SEA the role of the National Council will be upgraded as the highest body of political consultation on the national issue, which is the preeminent security problem of our country, and the National The Council needs sufficient and valid information and, above all, informed and documented assessments on the aspects of the Cyprus issue and related issues”.

The Spokesperson also mentioned that almost all the EU countries, all the Permanent Members of the United Nations Security Council, but also all the countries neighboring Cyprus, have a corresponding Council with one name or another.
