Science and society

How does the trustful exchange on an equal footing succeed?

The great and complex challenges of our time can only be solved through cooperation and exchange between science and society and across disciplinary boundaries. Art and culture, politics and economics often ask questions similar to science, but come from different methodological and technical perspectives. Citizens, on the other hand, bring completely different perspectives and experiences to the discourse.

But how can scientifically acquired knowledge be linked with practical, empirical and everyday knowledge? What role can science play in socially relevant discourses and how? What responsibility does society have towards science and vice versa? How accessible can top-level science be and how can reusability be made open but also secure? How transparent are scientific processes and how can society be included in quality assurance?

Experts from science and society will discuss with the BUA spokeswoman and President of the Humboldt University in Berlin Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. Sabine Art about these and other questions and thus contribute to an exchange between science and society. Participants can give their own impulses and help shape the discussion using interactive tools.

The Dance Floor is a Political Space!

An exchange of knowledge on the role of clubs for liberal and open societies

Because alternative rooms and clubs are disappearing, Berlin and other large cities have been sounding the alarm for several years. It is the symptom of a fundamental change in urban society: gentrification, housing shortages, rising rents and demographic change make it increasingly difficult to find and maintain places that can serve artists and marginalized population groups as a retreat. Often, however, such places are also experimental spaces for social utopias, alternative forms of coexistence and interaction. In addition, they are places of innovation: culturally, technologically and socially. What does it mean for liberal societies when such places disappear or become less accessible? How do they have to be designed? Can a society afford to lose such places? What can she do to preserve it? What role can science, politics or industry play alongside artists, activists and the public?

Sebastien Tremblay, Historian and postdoc at the Cluster of Excellence “Contestations of the Liberal Script – SCRIPTS“, Katharin Ahrend of the Berlin club commission, Music producer and activist Sarah Farina and the artist and presenter Steph C discuss these and other questions. The BUA invites you to an interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge between theory and practice, between science and society. The participants can contribute their own impulses and participate in the discussion using interactive tools.

The Transformative Effect of Science

A joint event of the Berlin University Alliance and the European Research Council (European Research Council, ERC)

Since the beginning of the scientific revolution nearly 500 years ago, our understanding of the world and our ability to influence it has expanded massively. This has led to tremendous advances in the use of energy, the production of material goods, the fight against disease and the feeding of a rapidly growing population. Life expectancy and quality of life have increased significantly in many places, and we have new opportunities for global travel and global communication that were unimaginable for our ancestors.

At the same time, however, this unprecedented growth has also led to the destruction of ecosystems, the exploitation of resources and pollution, the collapse of traditional communities and the emergence of existential risks such as global warming and the possibility of nuclear war. The question of how science relates to technology, innovation, practical use and growth is therefore of central importance for overcoming the numerous societal challenges and for creating a sustainable future.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. Sabine Art, President of the Humboldt University in Berlin and spokeswoman for the BUA, is called Prof. Dr. Maria Leptin, President of the European Research Council (European Research Council, ERC), welcome to Berlin. For Maria Leptin, who will take up her post on November 1, 2021, it will be her first visit to the German capital in her new role. She will give an insight into her ideas for the ERC and explain why basic research is essential and how it contributes to the transformation of research and society. ERC-funded scientists from the four network partners present their research projects and their transformative effects.
