The British royal family celebrates the first birthday of Lilibet, daughter of Meghan and Harry

The Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wished a happy first birthday to Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle’s newest child.

First candle for Lilibet. As the third day of the celebration of the jubilee of Elizabeth II begins, the youngest of Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, celebrates her first birthday this Saturday.

For the occasion, members of the British royal family, including the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wished him a happy birthday on Twitter.

Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, eighth in line to the British throne, was born on June 4 in Santa Barbara, California, unlike her big brother Archie (3 years old), born in London. His first names make tribute given the nickname Queen Elizabeth II, and Princess Diana who disappeared in 1997, respectively great-grandmother and grandmother of Lilibet.

Confidential Presentation to the Queen

Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle traveled from the United States with their children Archie and Lilibet to take part in Queen Elizabeth II’s four-day Platinum Jubilee celebrations in London.

But the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, withdrawn from the royal family since 2020 and living in California, were absent this Thursday alongside the 96-year-old sovereign during her appearance on the highly scrutinized Buckingham balcony for the Salute to the Colors ( Trooping the Colour). The reason: the honor of accompanying Her Majesty was, this year, limited to “members of the royal family who carry out official public engagements on behalf of the Queen”, specifies a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace.

They were, however, present at Buckingham Palace, as spotted by the British tabloids.

Harry and Meghan nevertheless found their family in public on Friday – a first for two years – during the thanksgiving mass at St Paul’s Cathedral, a celebration which Queen Elizabeth II did not attend due to “some discomfort”.

Meghan and Harry, installed at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, took advantage of the event to present Lilibet to her great-grandmother, on the sidelines of the festivities. Highly anticipated and delayed, this meeting however took place in a confidential manner and no photo has been published to date.

According to a source quoted by the American media Entertainment Tonightthe queen is expected to meet her great-granddaughter again this Saturday for her birthday.

Sporadic visits to the UK

Harry and Meghan’s visits to the Queen have been rare since they lost their police protection in the UK in 2020 following their withdrawal from the royal family.

If the prince has already confided that he would like to take his children Archie and Lilibet more regularly to his native country, he and his family “cannot return to his home” because it is too dangerous, a spokesperson said. Harry, citing in particular “extremist and neo-Nazi” threats.

In 2021, the Duke of Sussex launched a legal action to be able to benefit from new police protection, which he would pay personally, when he travels with his family to the United Kingdom.
