The beaver, a protected species, causes neighborhood conflicts

On the island of Androssart (Hastière), classified Natura 2000, they are the kings. But some complain about the nuisance caused in other places.

A few days ago, the mayor of Doische caused a sensation on the RTBF antennas. He complains about the economic impact of their nuisances and says that it would be necessary to remove a good number of beavers, responsible for dams on a stream in his entity.

Uproar among conservationists. But this kind of neighborhood conflict is more and more frequent. Natagora has also created a beaver working group that facilitates cohabitation between man and beaver, in particular through a network of sentries who regularly monitor occupied sites.

Even if exemptions exist, the European beaver benefits in Wallonia from a protection which includes its habitat and its constructions. It is forbidden to hunt it, trap it, capture it, move it, intentionally disturb it, or destroy its buildings, with fines.

Better than any other species, apart from man, it manages and transforms its habitat. In doing so, it rapidly and free of charge renaturalizes our waterways, allowing the return of a whole rich biodiversity and it contributes to their regulation and purification.
