The beautiful Audi Q8 expands the range of engines. Two plug-in hybrids are coming right away

The Audi Q8 range is complemented by hybrid variants with the option of recharging from a socket. They are called 55 TFSI and four and 60 TFSI and four.

The Audi Q8 is a model that serves as the flagship of the SUV series of the Ingolstadt car manufacturer. Since the arrival of this SUV coupe in 2018, its offer has gradually expanded. Thus, the common derivatives gradually supplemented the sports versions of the SQ8 (first in Europe with 4.0 TDI, later with 4.0 TFSI) and top design RS Q8 with super-strong eight-cylinder petrol engine. Now the portfolio is being further expanded.

This time, the Audi Q8 responds to strict emission standards, thus complementing the offer with two plug-in hybrids. The weaker one is called Q8 55 TFSI e quattro and provides a total maximum power of 280 kW and a torque of 600 Nm, the second is called Q8 60 TFSI e quattro and even offers 340 kW and 700 Nm

The technique of both variants is the same, the overall performance differs, among other things, due to the different strategy of supporting the internal combustion engine with an electric motor. In both cases, under the hood we find a six-cylinder 3.0 TFSI petrol with an output of 250 kW and a torque of 450 Nm, which cooperates with an electric motor with an output of 100 kW. This synchronous electric motor with a permanent magnet is integrated into the housing of the eight-speed gearbox and together with the clutch that connects the internal combustion engine with other parts of the drive system, it forms a so-called hybrid module.

All wheels are driven by an inter-axle differential with purely mechanical control. It distributes the driving force between the front and rear axles during normal driving in a ratio of 40:60. If necessary, it transmits most of the torque to the axle with better traction. Up to 85 percent of the driving force can be directed to the front wheels, while the rear axle can transmit up to 70 percent.

The set also logically includes a set of batteries, which is stored in a thin foil case under the floor of the boot. The batteries consist of 104 cells with a capacity of 48 Ah, which together provide 17.8 kWh of electricity. By the way, this is 0.5 kWh more than in the brotherly Q7 55 TFSI mentioned last year. In short, battery technology is evolving, so the plug-in hybrid Q7 will see this innovated kit, which is also more compact and about 40 kilograms lighter than the current one.

The battery according to the WLTP methodology will allow you to drive up to 48 kilometers in pure electric mode, in the case of the 60 TFSI e version, or up to 49 kilometers for the 55 TFSI e. The car’s electric motor itself can move up to 135 km / h.

As is usual with plug-in hybrids, there are several modes of operation of the cooperation of engines. The plug-in hybrid Q8 always starts on electricity, switching to hybrid mode only when the battery runs out of juice or when the driver depresses the throttle hard. The hybrid mode then includes three operating modes. It either automatically chooses between the two engines for the lowest possible consumption, or it can maintain the current state of charge of the batteries or it can even charge the batteries using an internal combustion engine. Furthermore, the behavior of individual car systems can be switched in several modes, comfort, efficiency, auto, dynamic, individual, offroad and allroad.

The pre-sale of the Audi Q8 with externally chargeable hybrid drive will start on the Czech market in the coming weeks. At the same time, the more powerful Q8 60 TFSI e quattro differs from the 55 TFSIe version at first glance by the standard S line outer package with distinctive stylistic details on the bow, sides and stern.

The Q8 is already the seventh externally chargeable hybrid model to be launched by Audi in mid-2019. Already in earlier months, plug-in hybrid derivatives have seen models A6 (55 TFSI e), A7 (55 TFSI e), A8 (60 TFSI e), Q5 (55 TFSI e), Q7 (55 TFSI e) and for the last time A3 (40 TFSI e).
