ÖVP and Greens announced their agreement on a government alliance on Wednesday evening. “It was possible to combine the best of both worlds,” said 33-year-old Kurz, who is about to return to the top of the government by electoral vote a good seven months after being deposed. Both parties wanted to protect “the climate and the borders”.
The conservatives dominate the future ministerial ranks: they secure the departments for home affairs, finance, defense and foreign policy. The Greens take over four ministries, including a “super ministry” for climate protection, the environment, energy, mobility, innovation and technology. As the Austrian news agency APA reported, Green Leader Kogler, as Vice-Chancellor, is to be responsible for sport, public service and art and culture.

According to the APA, the government program initially does not provide for any CO2 taxes. However, an ecological tax reform should be worked out, which will probably include a new regulation on the ticket tax and make flying more expensive. The truck toll should also be made more ecological.

Hard line on immigration
With the government program, Kurz is also continuing his tough line on immigration: According to the APA, the government program provides for the creation of a care agency for asylum seekers and return centers in order to better support the return of migrants to their countries of origin or to third countries.

Almost 280 Green delegates will vote on government participation at an extraordinary party conference on Saturday. Approval is expected, although the party also has to swallow hard chunks with a view to preventive detention and the headscarf ban. The swearing in of the new government is scheduled for next Tuesday. (SDA)
