The Arab Girl Award: Honoring the Literary Legacy of Aousha bint Khalifa Al Suwaidi

At the Symposium on Culture and Science in Dubai, I attended a special evening with a literary award, which bore the name of a great literary figure, who was known, for decades, by the literary cultural circles in the Al Jazeera region and the Arab Gulf as “The Girl of the Arabs”. She is the exceptional, creative poet Aousha bint Khalifa Al Suwaidi (2018- 1920).

The theme of the evening was about the third session of the award, and it was called “Awsha’s Constitution”, and this title is for one of her poems that are excellent, feminine in pronunciation, and revealing in significance, among her verses “I never thought of anything new / other than a memory that I wish its past would return”, in an implicit approach between the present And the past, and the poem appeared in the collection of “Arab Girl” 2017.

A huge and valuable work, its reader does not need much effort to imagine the magnitude of the effort that Dr. Rafia Obaid Ghobash, Chair of the Award’s Board of Trustees, and Founder of the Women’s Museum 2012, put into it, collecting, documenting, and investigating it.

The introduction necessarily leads to stopping at the award, to shed light on its launch in 2019, coinciding with the UAE’s celebrations of International Women’s Day. Let us ask our questions about the idea and its owner, and how was it worked on?

Especially after the award has become today an inspiring and tangible reality in reality, receiving lavish hospitality, not only from the founder, businessman Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, and sponsors interested in the importance of cultural action and its necessity in the march of the civilizational renaissance witnessed in the UAE, but rather from all writers in the local arena. And the Gulf, who were attracted to it, in order to enhance the valuable symbolism of Nabati poetry and its role, on the one hand.

And out of deep respect for the cultural act in its literary and artistic aspect, they represent some of its knights, on the other hand, which made the Arab Girl Award, immediately after the inauguration of its first session, a well-known transnational award, whose echoes apply the horizons of the Arab world from east to west.

In our next article, we will resume talking about the meaning of the relationship between the “Women’s Museum” as a collection of historical memories, and the “Arab Girl” collection as its first publication.
