The Alps were “on fire” the night from Saturday to Sunday. The Alpine Initiative has lit many “backfires” to alert the world that “glaciers are on their deathbed”.
Since 1988, activists have been lighting fires every year on the second weekend of August. This year, due to the drought and coronavirus situation, the Swiss participants started their own fire. They photographed themselves in front with a sign “The Alps are melting!”.
These images were compiled into a great digital fire. A warning signal that has been broadcast a thousand times around the world.
The alpine arc is increasingly threatened. For’Alpine Initiative, it is time to take drastic action. Melting permafrost destabilizes mountain slopes. Landslides, debris flows, mudslides hit the valleys and endanger human life and nature.
It is essential to avoid freight traffic and transfer it to the more ecological rail. CO2 emissions from road transport must be drastically reduced. The association also demands that CO2 reduction targets for trucks be introduced.
