“The Alarming Increase in Fentanyl Overdose Deaths in the United States”

Jakarta

The death rate from overdoses involving the synthetic opioid fentanyl has more than tripled in the United States, according to data from 2016 to 2021 released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Wednesday (3/5/2023).

Fentanyl is 50 times stronger than heroin, and 100 times stronger than morphine. This class of drugs is also very dangerous if mixed with other illegal drugs can often lead to fatal consequences, even death.

The CDC report shows that drug overdose death rates involving fentanyl or mixing this drug class with other illicit drugs increased from 5.7 per 100,000 people in 2016 to 21.6 per 100,000 in 2021.

Meanwhile, fentanyl-related deaths increased by about 55 percent in 2019-2020, and 24.1 percent in 2020-2021, said Merianne Rose Spencer, one of the report’s authors.

In the United States, those with addictions have struggled to find treatment for substance use disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic. Opioid-related deaths soared to a record high in 2020.

The Biden administration has pushed for action as drug-related overdose deaths in the US surpass 100,000 by 2021, according to government estimates.

Fentanyl is in a class of drugs known as fentanyl, fast-acting opioid drugs (synthetic opiates) that relieve pain without causing loss of consciousness (analgesics). Fentanyl depresses the central nervous system (CNS) and respiratory function.

This class of drugs was developed to treat intense pain from diseases such as cancer. The use of fentanyl in small doses can be fatal because this drug is 50 times stronger than heroin.
