the Academy of Medicine recommends vitamin D

In a press release published Friday, May 22, the National Academy of Medicine recommends looking into the vitamin D intake of patients with Covid-19 but also to provide them as a supplement if necessary.

“Vitamin D cannot be considered as a preventive or curative treatment for SARS-CoV-2 infection; but by mitigating the inflammatory storm and its consequences, it could be considered as an adjunct to any form of therapy“, said the National Academy of Medicine in the press release.

The ANM thus explains that vitamin D, “prohormone synthesized in the dermis under the effect of ultraviolet, that is to say of the rays of the sun”, is responsible “for the intestinal absorption of calcium and health bone “but also has” unconventional effects “. It thus modulates the immune system “by stimulating macrophages and dendritic cells” and therefore “plays a role in regulation and
suppressing the cytokine inflammatory response causing acute respiratory distress syndrome
who
characterizes the severe and often lethal forms of Covid-19 “.

The Academy also specifies that the administration of vitamin D orally is “a simple, inexpensive measure reimbursed by Health Insurance“.
