The Abu Dhabi Poetry Conference: Exploring Sheikh Zayed’s Poetic Legacy and Emirati Cultural Identity

Abu Dhabi, 13th October / WAM / The first sessions of the Abu Dhabi Poetry Conference, which came within the activities of the Abu Dhabi Poetry Festival, were launched, in the presence of a number of academics, experts and specialists in Arabic poetry, as well as poets, writers and intellectuals who exchanged their research and presented their research papers that discussed the poetic experience in the poems of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul, in addition to a session that discussed the close connection between poetry and Emirati cultural identity.
The first session of the conference was opened with the title “Dimensions of the poetic experience in the poems of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan,” where speakers discussed the poetic experience of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul, and the topics of his poems.
Dr. Nizar Aqrawi, Professor of Linguistics at the University of Dohuk, presented a paper entitled “The Aesthetics of Reception in the Poetry of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan,” and His Excellency Dr. Abdulaziz Al Musallam, President of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, presented a paper on “Nature in the Poetry of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan,” while the poet addressed Saad bin Abdullah Al-Hafi, through his paper “Investigation of Colloquial Poetry Texts Since the Fifth Century AH,” and the session was moderated by Dr. Hussein Salem Al-Sarhan.
As for the second session on the first day of the conference, it was called “Poetry and the Cultural Identity of the United Arab Emirates,” and Dr. Rashid Al Mazrouei participated in it, who spoke about the importance of popular poetry in consolidating national identity, and Dr. Ghassan Al-Hassan, who discussed the story of the poetry collection of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan from 1982 until its issuance, and the poet Saad Al-Hafi moderated the session that witnessed a discussion about the close connection between Emirati cultural identity and poetry. The themes included the importance of place and its impact on poetry, such as the sea and the desert, in addition to a number of characteristics that had a prominent impact on the development of Nabati and classical poetry in the Emirates.
As part of the conference’s activities, a session was held entitled “The Impact of Modernity on Nabati Poetry,” moderated by Saeed bin Karaz Al Muhairi, Advisor to the Festivals Management Committee, in which Dr. Hamoud Al Jalawi participated with a paper on the impact of the Million Poet Program in unifying the language of popular poetry, and Dr. Ali Abdel Halim with a paper on the impact of transformation. Digital in the spread of Nabati poetry, and Dr. Muhammad Haqqi, who dealt with the poetry of translation of Arabic poetry as an example.

The speakers discussed the effects of modernity on Nabati poetry, such as digital transformation as a means of spreading Nabati poetry. A distinguished discussion took place between the attendees and participants about the role of translation and the transfer of the poem to other languages. The participants also discussed the importance of translation and the role of the poet-translator in conveying the aesthetics of Nabati poetry to other languages.
The conference will continue its sessions tomorrow, Saturday, with two sessions: “The Status of Poetry and Digital Transformation” and “Twinning between Eloquent Poetry and Nabataean Poetry.”
