At this end of year period, the Poitiers SPA, the rescue and protection of animals, protects against Christmas favorites. “An animal is neither a product nor a toy!” Before the holidays, the Minister of Agriculture Julien Denormandie had already unveiled his plan against the abandonment of animals in France, and this requires a necessary awareness.
The gift we find on the roadside
At the Poitiers SPA, we too often realize that the puppies found at the foot of the tree in December, they are found six months later abandoned on the edge of the RN10 or the A10. Employees and volunteers are therefore very firm with regard to Christmas requests.
No favorite adoptions or whims that risk turning into abandonment later, explains Caroline Langlois one of the officials.
However, the Pictavian refuge comes up against a principle of reality: of course, during the confinement, there was fewer dropouts, but also fewer adoptions. The Poitiers SPA therefore finds itself with more than 450 animals on its hands: a hundred dogs, 350 cats and also NACs, new pets, type rats, gerbils, etc. And for all these creatures, families have to be found. The refuge is of course looking for adoptive families, but also temporary foster families.
Need for arms and donations
The association is also looking for volunteers and accepts food, games and all kinds of material for the animals. Likewise, the confinement led to a drop in financial donations. Gold the SPA is in deficit and will need the generosity of animal lovers. A call has been launched on the Helloasso internet platform. But it is also possible to send checks or make money transfers.
Necessary work
Not to mention that the Poitevin animal rescue system will have to carry out work in 2021: it is necessary enlarge the boxes, secure them, install treatment areas. The project is under development. But here too, it will take money and arms: for example, the association is looking for craftsmen who would agree to work voluntarily on part of the work so as to lower the total amount of the invoice estimated for the moment at around 50,000 euros. .
