The 12VHPWR connectors are melting again, this time the ones from CableMod

Fusible connectors 12VHPWR, which can be found on GeForce RTX 4000 graphics cards, are quite a scarecrow. The fact is that this only affects an extremely small number of cases and turns out to be a user error (similar to the cases of melted 8pins, which today are considered durable, although they can suffer the same). However, it also turned out that he and the design of the connector itself are not exactly ideal and are very sensitive to even the slightest user error. And that’s not good either. The big problem was mainly with the Astron cables. CableMod was one of those who rushed in with a new and better solution. However, it seems that even the effort for a better quality cable does not always lead to a good result here.

In fact, user Humble-Brilliant-654 posted on Reddit a picture of CableMod’s 12VHPWR cable, which also melted, although it was supposed to be of better construction and quality. This again suggests that the whole solution of the 12VHPWR standard may be incomplete, and that even a better quality cable may not be 100% resistant to user errors (which is probably not even possible to assume). We do not yet know whether this was also the case. The user’s computer started shutting down under load after two months of build and the cable was found to be destroyed. Fortunately, in this case, the graphics card did not suffer, it survived without damage. CableMod will replace the defective cable and let it be known that if the graphics card is damaged by its cable (if the fault of the user is ruled out) he would also take care of replacing the graphics, which he has already done in several cases in the past.
