Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 3080 with twelve gigabytes of video memory was killed before it even launched. The device is now rumored to be resurrected as the upcoming Geforce RTX 4070 Ti with a launch early next year.
Nvidia unveiled its Ada Lovelace architecture and Geforce RTX 40 series just a few weeks ago. Shortly after, the company chose to “launch”RTX 4080 with 12 GB of video memory. A move explained by Nvidia in a short blog post claiming that consumers had been confused by having two graphics cards with the same name on store shelves.
However, Nvidia’s cheapest Lovelace graphics card wasn’t supposed to go away entirely. Nvidia has most likely already started building stock of components for the cheaper RTX 4080 model. Partner manufacturers have also started producing associated components for their variants.
The original RTX 4080 12GB will instead become the RTX 4070 Ti.

However, it’s unclear exactly what form the 12GB RTX 4080 will take when it resurrects. However, the Twitter profile kopite7kimi, which often figures in hardware leaks, now claims that the discontinued graphics card will launch as the Geforce RTX 4070 Ti. Elsewhere, it is also stated that the card will be launched early next year.
It remains to be seen how well this rumor actually turns out to be true. Currently, Nvidia has nothing that is at the same target price as AMD Radeon RX 7000 series to be launched in December. The 16GB RTX 4080 starts at $ 1,200, while AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XTX has an MSRP of $ 999. AMD devices coming soon.
