That means the update on WhatsApp

WhatsApp’s privacy policy has been revised. You must now know these things about it!

Almost everyone communicates on WhatsApp every day. Be it with friends via chat, video or voice message, in exchange with other parents from the children’s school or in an office group for the job. It’s so quick and easy – but the app isn’t free as you might think. You pay with exactly this data: your telephone number, your location, simply all of your communication.

Now WhatsApp has revised its data protection regulations and EVERY user must agree to this if they want to continue using the messenger service after February 8, 2021. And the new version has it all!

Here is an overview of what is in the new usage regulations and what will happen to your data in the future.

What should I do?

When you open the app, a large window appears with a brief description. There is a button for details. You can either agree immediately or click on “not now” at Samsung or on the “X” at the top right of Apple. Then you have to decide by February 8th at the latest. If you do not agree, you can no longer use the app. There is no option to object this time.

What does the new regulations say?

The fact that users have to agree to new data protection regulations in order to continue using all functions is nothing new. But with the current version of WhatsApp, there is one crucial point that everyone should know: Your data will now also be shared with Facebook. And that regardless of whether you have a Facebook account or not.

Your chats remain confidential thanks to the encryption. But the following data is then shared with the parent company Facebook, for example:

  • Account information
  • Phone number
  • Information about the device
  • Information about services
  • Interactions
  • IP address

Why is all this being done?

According to the terms and conditions, Facebook wants to better understand the usage behavior of users in order to improve the services. In this way, suggestions could be made better or functions could be personalized in the future. Of course, individual advertising could also be an issue.

For everyone who already has a Facebook or Instagram account, the new data protection regulation does not mean a big change. Because the method has been practiced there for a long time.
