That is why the inflammation on the face is not harmless

Nasal furuncles are one of the most painful forms of boils because they irritate every movement of the face. Find out how to get rid of the boil and which treatment is particularly useful here.

By permanently stressing the skin or touching the face with dirty fingers, bacteria can easily get into the skin layers and cause inflammation there. Often only pimples form, but in some cases the bacteria can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and accumulate there to form a painful, nodular structure: a boil.

What is a nasal furuncle?

A nasal furuncle is a bacterial inflammation in the nose area. The inflammation can occur both inside – at the nasal entrance – and outside at the tip of the nose or at the bridge of the nose. Often these are bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) that penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and collect around the hair follicle. The follicle hardens around a pus and is very painful. You can feel a noticeable pull especially when speaking or chewing.

In many cases, the area around the nasal furuncle is swollen. Long nasal hair, as well as chronic inflammation of the nasal mucosa support the formation of a nasal furuncle. People with a weakened immune system, such as those with diabetes, are particularly affected.

Staphylococcus aureus
Boils are often caused by the skin bacteria staphylococcus aureus. They colonize both the skin and the mucous membranes. In addition to boils, staphylococcus aureus can also lead to abscesses and other wound infections.

What are the symptoms?

Inflammation is often felt under the skin. This increases within a few days, sometimes even hours. A tight, small swelling forms, which is also very painful, warm and very red. A knot is noticeable under the elevation, which resembles a large pimple. Later pus accumulates in the nasal furuncle, which then empties by itself. Nose furuncles are between half a centimeter and two centimeters in diameter.

Nasal furuncle: treatment of inflammation

As a rule, a nasal furuncle is harmless and heals itself within a few days or weeks. To do this, however, treatment with disinfectant ointments and heat envelopes or compresses or a red light lamp must take place. You can also apply thin antiseptic ointments to the boil.

In addition, the nasal furuncle must not be touched. Do not push or pull on the affected area. You should also refrain from cutting or treating with agents that have not been prescribed by a doctor.

For the treatment to be successful, the nasal furuncle and its surroundings should be kept as still as possible. In this way, the spread can be prevented inside and outside. In some cases, this can mean a short bed rest and not talking or chewing. The food should then be rather soft or even liquid.

Caution
If a nasal furuncle is not properly treated, scarring can occur.

Do you have to go to the doctor for a nasal furuncle?

If the nasal furuncle does not heal, ignites or spreads through the facial veins to the eye, you should immediately consult a dermatologist or your family doctor. They can prescribe antibiotics in the form of tablets or ointments or a so-called traction ointment with the active ingredient ammonium bituminosulfonate.

It is important to get medical help if the condition worsens and not to try to get rid of the nasal fever. This usually makes the situation worse. In the worst case, the bacteria in the boil can get into the bloodstream and thus lead to blood poisoning. Then thrombosis, phlebitis or even meningitis (meningitis) can be at risk.

Another reason to see a doctor for a nasal fever is if the doctor keeps coming back or causes severe pain. In these cases, the inflammation on the face can also be another illness – such as diabetes or a chronic infection.

Can you have nasal furuncles removed?

If the ointment does not work or a lot of pus has accumulated in the nasal furuncle, the doctor must remove it professionally. The treatment often takes only a few minutes. For this, the inflammation is cut open and the pus is removed. The wound must then be disinfected regularly and treated with an anti-inflammatory ointment. It is also important that the affected area is not moved until the wound has healed sufficiently. It is therefore often necessary to do without speaking and chewing.

Can nasal fever be avoided?

To prevent painful inflammation of the hair follicle on the face, you should

  • just touch your face with clean fingers,
  • ensure adequate personal hygiene,
  • sufficiently disinfect the affected areas after hair removal on the face,
  • do not squeeze pimples or inflammation on the face and
  • Give your skin enough air to breathe.

Also try to avoid permanent chafing of objects – such as fabric – or to relieve the area afterwards.

Also, talk to your doctor about whether you may have a history of stress or whether taking certain medications, such as cortisone, could make boils.
