Thanks to tiny LEDs, this year’s top TVs will be better than anything

At this year’s biggest technology show, CES 2022, this time, manufacturers unveiled what high-end products we can expect this year. Sure, OLED will continue to dominate in general, but the top category is increasingly in the area of Micro LED, and Samsung is getting better here, but LG is also connected in time.

It has to be said that Micro LED isn’t new, it has actually been around for a few years now, and everyone is trying to guess when they can finally take the place of OLED in the absolute top category. Well, the answer to that is probably this year, at least if it’s up to Samsung, for sure.

We could say that Samsung is pushing this technology so much because it lags behind LG in OLED, but it doesn’t completely cover the reality: Micro LED actually combines the best features of the two technologies, OLED and traditional LED.

Samsung is increasingly conquering the top category with its Micro LEDSource: Samsung

Accordingly, Samsung’s new Micro LED TVs provide 25 million tiny diodes for backlighting the pixels, all of which are just micrometers in size. This means that these devices can control the backlight just as precisely as OLED panels, so black always stays black, only the brightness is much higher and the colors are even better.

As Samsung puts it all in the absolute top category, the dimensions should come as no surprise: the smallest is 89 inches, which is inhumanly large, and the largest is 110 inches, which we can’t really imagine where it fits. On the other hand, if you want the best possible color fidelity, contrast, and brightness, with Doby Atmos-capable surround sound built into your TV, you don’t have to look anywhere else.

Of course, neither QLED nor OLED lags behind

Samsung is already envisioning a lower category with the Neo QLED, the previous generation of which was just unveiled at last year’s CES. It’s actually a Mini LED display, so the backlighting diodes aren’t as tiny as the Micro LEDs, but Samsung is trying to get over these different software tricks. In any case, the 16,384 different levels of brightness are probably plenty for even the most sensitive eye, as last year’s top models knew exactly a quarter that much, and they already had an amazing picture.

Sony is trying to combine the benefits of OLED and quantum point LED technologySource: Sony

Sony, on the other hand, stays on the OLED line for the time being, just fooling it with quantum dot technology. This is how QD-OLED was born at the Japanese company, which brings a contrast-like image and super blacks, as well as higher brightness and better colors, with a different technology than Samsung’s solution.

In addition, Sony will not miss the proven traditional OLED technology, which offers all sizes in different categories, from 42 inches upwards.

LG is still the king of OLED TVs, and they are trying to emphasize this with a larger device than ever before. So far, 88 inches was the largest, but it was also 8K resolution and pricelessly expensive. Now the largest in the G2 series has been introduced, which is 4K but 97 inches. We don’t know yet how much it will cost. In contrast, in the audience’s favorite C-Series, the C2 OLED will now be available in a smaller 42-inch size than ever before, equipped with everything gamers could need, including support for 120Hz and VRR.

LG continues to dominate OLED, but with its new brutal-sized Micro LED TV, it is signaling that it will not lag behind this line either.Source: LG

But let’s not believe LG is lagging behind the Micro LED line. The Korean company is now launching its own 136-inch Micro LED TV in the absolute top category, the price of which is still unknown, but we would be surprised if it could be bought for under $ 100,000.
