Thai couple sentenced to over 12,000 years in prison for online fraud scheme

A Thai court has sentenced a couple to 12,640 years in prison for online fraud. Wantanee Tippaweth and her husband Methi Chinfa were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment. The reason for the punishment was the fraudulent investment program conducted by them in 2019. During the trial, the couple pleaded guilty to the charges against them.

Between March and October 2019, they reached out to people through Facebook. People were advised to invest online. Investors were promised a return of 93 percent. They also used many fake methods online for the fraud program. They showed their gold jewelery and jewelery shop to people online. It was all a scam.

They said that the jewelery shown was in her name. This was a fake shop. They were using it as an office space and the counter of the room was shown as a jewellery. They bought millions of dollars from various people through fake means. More than 2,000 people were recruited into the scam. The old people were given the money paid by the new members of the scheme.

They used to mislead people by showing them the lifestyle of the rich. They made 2533 people part of the fraud scheme. 51.3 million dollars were collected from people through the project. Meanwhile, the Thai Criminal Court has reduced the trial court’s sentence of 12,640 years to 5,056 years because the defendants confessed to the crime. At the same time, according to the penal procedures in Thailand, the maximum prison sentence imposed on a person here is 20 years.
