Thai Angler Catches Giant Catfish: Endangered Species Saved in Dramatic Rescue

Bangkok

The face of an angler in Thailand immediately lit up when he saw his catch. How could it not be, a fish giant catfish successfully obtained. This incident caused a stir last year.

The angler in question is named Somchai Boontong. So the story goes, he took part in a fishing competition to raise funds.

The competition was held at a lake in Udon Thani Province. When he struck, Somchai felt a fairly heavy pull. He didn’t expect a large creature to eat his bait. After trying hard, the fish was finally pulled to the surface.

When it was lifted, everyone immediately shook their heads in disbelief. Somchai caught a Mekong giant catfish.

When measured, the length of the catfish was almost two meters. Meanwhile, its weight reaches 299 kilograms, so its size is approximately the same as a sacrificial cow.

The fish traders then scrambled to buy the fish, because the price of the meat was around 100 THB (Rp. 43 thousand) per kilogram. However, Somchai decided to sell it to a fundraising team who bought the giant fish for 20,000 THB (Rp. 8.7 million) and released it back into its natural habitat.

The local fisheries department helped transport the catfish to the pond at the Wat Nong Ruea Klon temple. The staff monitored him for an hour to make sure he adjusted to his new environment.

The Mekong giant catfish is listed as a ‘critically endangered’ species under the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List. Overfishing, loss of their habitat, and the damming of the Mekong River are cited as threats to their population, as quoted by detikINET from the News-Journal.
