Texas Begins Arresting and Prosecuting Migrant Women Crossing the Border: New Developments

Since this week, migrant women who cross the border without visas or appointments to submit their asylum applications are now arrested and prosecuted in Texas. For two years, only migrant men were arrested by Texas security forces who had orders to hand over women and children to federal border guards.

Arresting only migrant men and not women was discrimination. The Texas authorities have therefore just opened a detention center for migrant women not far from the border with Reynosa in Mexico. It must be said that in recent months, in several trials, complaints have been dismissed because of this discrimination and male asylum seekers have been released.

In the United States, crossing the border illegally is a federal offense, so Texas found a way to stop migrants by prosecuting them for minor crimes of trespassing or trespassing on private property. Most of the border land is in fact privately owned.
