Testimonies: three Chartres students mobilized in Covid-19 services

Their names are Lionel, Juliette and Laure. He is a student caregiver, they are students in the second year of nursing, at the Institute of training in nursing and training of caregivers (Ifsi-Ifas) in Chartres.

External consultations are gradually resuming at the Louis-Pasteur hospital, in Coudray

There is no doubt that the past two months will remain in the memory of these young people, whose professional careers hardly started when they were mobilized in Covid-19 services in the department.

A challenge taken up by Ifsi

Chartres Ifsi-Ifas Director of Care, Christophe Peters, explains:

“We took up a challenge, responding to urgent needs in the field, without interrupting the training, so as not to postpone graduation. “

An educational contract has been put in place so that pupils and students can carry out work remotely. At the same time, “we have set up a census system for 2nd and 3rd year nursing students and nursing assistant students available to help in the field”, continues the director.

84 of them were mobilized in Covid services: the nursing students were as caregivers and the student caregivers as hospital workers.

Like his comrade Laure: “The team was out of breath. We arrived with our dynamism. ”

Crisis forces, the two students quickly adapt to the situation. “The team took care of us well, supported us, very quickly taught us the rules of hygiene and dressing. “

Students propelled to the front line

As a nursing assistant, Lionel joined the Gérard-Vivien nursing home, in Courville-sur-Eure. He too benefited from the good care of the healthcare team: “We felt that they did not consider us as students but as professionals. “

Students on the front line therefore, while the hospital environment was facing a major crisis. They too were able to cope with the situation. “The hardest part was seeing the deteriorating condition of the patients,” said Juliette. For Laure, “this crisis brings a lot of emotions, there have been deaths, it’s not easy. What is hard for residents is also containment. We tried to overcome this isolation as well as possible. “

Internally, we are proud to have contributed during this period

But everyone agrees on one feeling: pride. “I think we all had our place. I am proud to be part of this family of caregivers, ”says Lionel. “Internally, we are proud to have contributed during this period. It allowed us to create a beautiful cohesion, ”adds Laure.

Coronavirus: what will the health brigades be used for?

For the director of Ifi-Ifas, this experience was a turning point for these students. “There is a before and after Covid, in the posture of the students, their ability to adapt. They demonstrated professionalism and earned the respect of all. “

Progress observed

Some, like Laure, are still in a Covid service, at the end of May, and are continuing their mission. A survey was carried out among these future nurses and nursing assistants to find out their feelings.

“There are rather positive returns, even if this period is very painful for some, because nobody was prepared for that. We observe that the students have progressed radically, both professionally and in terms of maturity, “adds Christophe Peters.
