Few people know that until certain times the topic of piracy was taboo in Hollywood. Films telling about the adventures of sea robbers faced an unenviable fate – “Cutthroat Island” brought only losses, “Water World” almost put an end to Kevin Costner’s career. Filming the water scenes cost a fortune, but it was impossible to recoup the costs at the box office. When Gore Verbinski set out to make the film “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” analysts predicted his brainchild would fail. And the main star of the future film, Johnny Depp, was not on the list of box office celebrities at that time. What was unexpected was the success that awaited Verbinski’s brainchild: in 2003, the film grossed about $650 million, an impressive amount for those times. It is curious that “Pirates of the Caribbean” became the first film to premiere at Disneyland – at first this fact also inspired skepticism among film critics.
