Test Porsche Taycan 4S: This car is rock ‘n’ roll

The speed: 180 km / h. The music: hard. The entertainment: at a controlled volume. Accompanied by throaty singing and Blastbeats we roar in an electric Porsche from Hamburg on the A7 motorway north and enjoy the sounds the Icelandic black metal band Misþyrming.

In 2015, Porsche exhibited at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt an electrically powered sports car. It was intended as a concept, but in the same year the Stuttgart manufacturer announced the car to be built in series. 2019 war the production version is ready. The first Taycans were made shipped in the US in December.

Does a Porsche work in electric?

But how does an electric Porsche drive? Is it possible to transfer a vehicle that also lives from the sound of its combustion engine to electromobility? “We will also tap into the emotion there”said Porsche head of development Michael Steiner in 2017 Golem.de. We wanted to know whether it worked.

In the north of Hamburg the traffic will be a little less. That means: There is even more acceleration. As is typical of an electric car, we are pushed into our seats. 190, 200, 210 – the Porsche can be accelerated up to 250 km / h, and still no rumbling of the engine disturbs the music. The instrumental piece Hælið continues to sound crystal clear.

However, beyond 190 km / h, driving becomes strenuous. The steering wheel requires a firm grip. The landscape flies by at breakneck speed, obstacles are there in an instant. It is a little slower to relax: at 170 or 180 km / h it is easy to cruise on the motorway. The car sits well on the road and the driving experience is just as relaxed as in another car at 130 km / h.

However, driving fast has its price: The charge level of the battery is falling noticeably. After about 70 km we leave the motorway and change the direction of travel. After a few kilometers we head for the Aalbek West service area. One of the overview maps showed us that there is a fast charging station there.

The needle knocks out on the Ionity HP charger

There are three charging stations from E.on with different connections and four from Ionity. The Joint venture between the car manufacturers BMW, Daimler, Ford and the Volkswagen subsidiaries Audi and Porsche offers High Power Charging (HPC) at its stations.

When we arrive, according to the display on the center console, the charge level is below 30 percent. We’re stuck the heavy HPC cable and start the charging process. Wait briefly until the pillar and the vehicle have agreed. Electricity then flows: a kind of speedometer on the screen of the charging station shows the power that is being charged. The speedometer needle hits up to 250 kilowatts, the voltage according to the display is 750 volts. 270 kilowatts and 800 volts are possible. But the battery should have been empty for that.

Until it is full, there is some time to take a closer look at the car.
