Tesla boss Elon Musk reacts sharply to the announcement from California that the electric car pioneer is not yet allowed to start up his only US vehicle plant because of the corona risks. Tesla will withdraw the corporate headquarters from California with immediate effect.

The company will move its headquarters to Texas or Nevada, Musk tweeted on Saturday. He also left the future of the Fremont plant in Alameda, California, with around 10,000 employees open. That will depend on how Tesla will continue to be handled there in the future.

The reason for this is the Alameda district’s refusal to reopen the San Francisco plant from last Friday. Musk had written to employees in an email that restricted operations with 30 percent of the normal workforce per shift should then be resumed. Alameda’s health officials said it shouldn’t be working again because restrictions on curbing the corona virus were still in place. California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, said Thursday that it would allow factories to open in the state again. However, Alameda had decided that the shutdown should continue until the end of May, with the exception of essential companies.

A district official had said on Friday that health officials had had numerous conversations with Tesla and recommended that they monitor Covid 19 infection numbers for at least a week and talk about safe ways to resume production.

Musk had repeatedly criticized the lockdown as a serious danger to US companies and as unconstitutional. He also announced on Saturday that he would sue the Alameda district.

Tesla is also currently working on the construction of a plant in Grünheide near Berlin, which is scheduled to go into operation in 2021. Up to 12,000 employees are expected to manufacture up to 500,000 electric cars there each year.
