Tesla sued for internally distributing video recordings in customers’ cars Car

Electric car manufacturer Tesla is being sued for violating the privacy of Tesla car owners. Images of customers in and around the car were viewed and distributed by Tesla employees.

The reason for the lawsuit is research by the Reuters news agency, which reported that Tesla employees have access to video images recorded by the cameras in the cars. Those sometimes intimate or embarrassing videos were then distributed within the company.

Naked man

The recordings range from a naked man walking towards a Tesla to traffic incidents. Some images were commented on before being shared in group chats, Reuters previously reported. In one of the videos, a Tesla scoops a child on a bicycle. That footage quickly spread through a Tesla office in Silicon Valley, the indictment says.

Tasteless entertainment

The Tesla owner who has filed the suit with the court speaks of ‘tasteless entertainment’. She wants a so-called ‘class action’ lawsuit, which will make it possible for other victims to join. The demand is that Tesla ceases the “illegitimate conduct” and pays undisclosed damages.

Tesla says it will use the video footage to develop car technology that makes it possible for cars to drive independently. The owners give permission for sharing those images on the touchscreen of their car. In a privacy statement for customers, Tesla explains that the images cannot be traced back to a specific customer.
