Tesla becomes a China car

(Elbil24 🙂 Tesla is known as an American company, which until now has produced most of the models in Freemont, California. This also applies to the cars that end up on the Norwegian market, regardless of which model you have chosen.

Many of the cars that end up in Europe visit Tesla’s facilities in Tillburg in the Netherlands before being sent on to the respective countries.

This is to install lights and other things that vary from market to market, as well as an extra preparation.

..then we take Berlin

As is well known, Tesla is also in the process of building a factory in Berlin, which will presumably produce cars for the European market as early as next year.

In an interview we had with Elon Musk some time ago, he was aware that in the long run he would have to produce both batteries and cars closer to the respective markets.

When the factory in Berlin starts production during the next year, it will primarily be Model Y that will be produced there. This is a model Tesla has high expectations of, and is a model that fits the European market like a glove.

The reason is that the market first and foremost demands what they call SUVs, but which in practice are slightly taller cars that you get into, rather than down into. In Europe, a lot of cars are also sold that can work for any need, which have plenty of space , has the option of towing and who may have a ski box on the roof – especially important for Ola Normann.

When we look at the success Tesla has had with the Model 3 in this country, a car that is low and relatively small that the market would not normally light on, it is easy to understand why there are high expectations for the Model Y.

Becomes Chinese

Now, however, Bloomberg announces that Tesla will let the factory in China take care of the production of the Tesla Model 3 for Europe. Tesla is of course aware that the rest of the automotive industry is now launching competing models, cars such as VW ID.3 and ID.4, Skoda Enyaq, Ford Mustang Mach-E (to be manufactured in Mexico), and a number of others brands and models.

Producing the cars in China will apparently make it possible to produce them cheaper, and thus have the opportunity to make them more competitive.

Tesla, on the other hand, is not alone in producing in China for the European and Norwegian markets. Recently launched Polestar 2 is manufactured in China. The same with BYD, MG, Xpeng and a large number of other upcoming models. That time is also over, when one could with the hand on the heart establish that Chinese-made goods are both cheap and bad.

Initially, the factory in China was intended to produce only cars for the local market, with a total capacity of 200,000 cars a year. Now, according to Bloomberg’s sources, this has changed, and cars will have to be sent to several other markets, including Europe.

What will this mean for us?

It is far too early to say whether it will have any impact at all. As consumers, we can hope that it will make the cars cheaper, that Tesla uses a possibly cheaper production process to make the cars even more competitive. This will put pressure on all the other manufacturers, and give cheaper cars all over Fjøla. Beyond this, there is little reason to believe it does anything with the quality.

The facilities in China are brand new, and designed to maintain a certain standard. Elon Musk himself has said that the factory in Berlin will spit out better-built cars than they do in the USA, something we would like to see. At times, there have been a lot of serial errors, not least paint problems, with the cars from Freemont. If, in addition to better cars, we can end up with cheaper cars, then it is solely a matter for us consumers. Whether it will become a reality remains to be seen.

According to the sources, China-produced Model 3 for Europe will start in the fourth quarter of this year, or just over the New Year.
