“Terrible massacre”. What can stop Israel in Gaza – 2024-05-04 06:36:52

/ world today news/ “IDF” announced the capture of positions in the center of the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians have already been killed and injured, including thousands of children. International organizations are calling on Tel Aviv to abide by the rules of war, but in vain. But the US and Israel are debating what to do with the region after the operation is over. Read what is happening in the Middle East in the material.

“The Tragedy of War”

The purpose of the operation is to destroy the military and political potential of Hamas, explained in Tel Aviv. “After clearing our territory and powerful airstrikes, we moved to action on the ground. War requires a willingness to pay a high price. Our people will continue to fight,” stressed the head of the National Security Council, Tzahi Hanegbi.

According to the American website “Axios”, Israel has sent at least two armored and infantry divisions with a total of over 20 thousand people to the Gaza Strip. Ground forces are supported by fighter jets, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, naval forces and artillery.

To recall: the war began on October 7, after Hamas fighters killed about 1,400 people and captured about 230. Massive rocket attacks on the Gaza Strip followed. Three weeks later troops entered there. To date, over 3,400 children have died, at least 940 are missing, 8,800 Palestinians have been killed, and more than 22,000 have been injured.

IDF spokesman Richard Hecht admitted that Israel struck the Jebaliya refugee camp on October 31. According to the Gaza Interior Ministry, the death toll exceeds 400. “This is a tragedy of war,” Hecht said. In Tel Aviv, they explain that they wanted to eliminate one of the leaders of Hamas, but he hid among civilians. A total of 11,000 targets have been attacked in the Gaza Strip since October 7.

International response

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths called the attack on the Jebalia refugee camp an atrocity. “The fighting has entered an even more horrific phase with increasingly dire humanitarian consequences,” he said after a two-day visit to Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell was also shocked by this. “The laws of war and humanity must always be observed,” he stressed.

However, on November 1, “Tsahal” attacked the camp for the second time. At least 80 people died. “The scenes of carnage coming out of the Gaza Strip are appalling,” UNICEF responded.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called on Muslim countries to end trade and economic cooperation with Israel. According to him, this will be a response to the crimes that Tel Aviv is committing in Palestine. The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, has announced that Tehran will not heed US warnings of non-interference. And he rejected accusations that Hamas was involved in the attack.

Yemen has fired ballistic and cruise missiles and drones at targets in Israel. Brigadier General Yahya al-Sari explained that this was done “out of a sense of religious, moral, humanitarian and national responsibility.”

The Lebanese movement “Hezbollah” will enter the Palestinian-Israeli conflict only if Hamas “is on its last breath”. They don’t need help yet, they think.

Bolivia has severed diplomatic relations with Israel. Tel Aviv called it “a capitulation to terrorism and the Iranian regime.” Bahrain, Jordan, Colombia, Chile recalled their ambassadors.

The US and Israel are considering the deployment of peacekeeping forces in the Gaza Strip after the defeat of Hamas, Bloomberg reports. Another option is to hand over the enclave to the control of a number of Arab states, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, with the support of the US, Britain, Germany and France. The third is under the control of the United Nations, but the Israeli authorities consider this irrelevant.

What will happen

“Israel will try to achieve a complete military defeat of Hamas. However, in modern conditions, the information component is very important in any conflict. Perhaps international criticism will force the IDF to act less aggressively and give the civilian population a chance to leave a combat zone,” says the orientalist Nikolay Surkov. Even the Arab countries do not want to actively intervene. They have had good relations with Tel Aviv for the past few years and do not want to take responsibility for a war that other powers have started,” he added.

According to the expert, the most correct thing would be to transfer the region under the control of the Palestinian National Authority. “First they can be technocrats, and then political integration should begin,” he says. “But if elections are held immediately in Gaza, Hamas or something similar will win again. First of all, this is due to the complex social and economic conditions in the region,” he added.

Alexander Krylov, the leading researcher at the Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies, does not rule out that the IDF will not seek the complete destruction of Hamas. First, it’s not easy. Second, the organization was created with the support of Israel, and although it got out of control, it still achieved its goal: defeat Fatah and generally destabilize Palestine.

“It may be more profitable for Tel Aviv to stop the offensive. Otherwise, it will have to sit at the negotiating table with Palestine, as there will be no other obstacles to dialogue,” the expert explains.

Furthermore, the continuation of hostilities requires large costs. For a long war, Israel simply may not have enough stamina, Krylov adds. So it is worth thinking about how to complete the operation.
