Tens of thousands protest in Rome against neo-fascist groups

Tens of thousands of people have demonstrated in Rome against the neo-fascist groups in Italy. The protest comes a week after a demonstration against the introduction of the mandatory corona pass in the workplace. Right-wing extremists seized the opportunity of that protest to break into a union office and cause destruction.

Twelve leaders of the neo-fascist movement Forza Nuova were arrested.

Thousands of protesters

CGIL, the country’s largest union, organized a counter-protest today, along with two other unions. Tens of thousands of union members and others attended; the police estimate that there were 50,000 demonstrators, the CGIL speaks of 100,000 people, writes the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

Those in attendance called on the government to ban the neo-fascist groups. “We are asking for concrete actions. It is time for the state to show its democratic strength and uphold the laws and the constitution,” CGIL union leader Maurizio Landini said in a speech.

“A country that loses its memory has no future,” he added.
