Tens of thousands are evacuated due to flood danger in Sydney

The state authorities in New South Wales have asked people to prepare for continued torrential rain on Monday, before the weather is expected to improve on Tuesday.

Several days of heavy rainfall have meant that some areas have been hit by heavy flooding for the fourth time in the last year and a half. Particularly low-lying areas in western Sydney and around the Nepean and Hawkesbury rivers are at risk.

Aerial photos of the suburb of Camden in western Sydney show that long stretches of road are completely under water and that parts of buildings have also been flooded.

The Sydney area has already been exposed to four times as much rain as it usually has in July, according to local media.

In March, the last time there was extensive flooding in Sydney, the bodies of water built up with rain for seven days in a row. But this time there has been comparable amounts of rain in a much shorter time, meteorologist Jane Golding explains.

Some of the areas now affected were also affected by historic floods in February and March.
