Absent from the courts since early July, and his defeat against Hubert Hurkacz, in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, Roger Federer (40) should not make his comeback on the ATP circuit, next january, at the Australian Open.
Ivan Ljubicic unveiled at the microphone of Mediaset that the Balois had only «very unlikely» to line up in Melbourne, the first Grand Slam tournament he has won six times. The Croatian coach has confirmed that his player wants to resume competition when he is at 100% of his capacity only.
«We talked about it and I can guarantee he wants to continue playing tennis. He is currently in rehabilitation, because he wants to come back», explained the 42-year-old technician. Before being more pessimistic about a possible participation of the current 16th player in the world in the Australian Major: «I think there is very little chance. He’s still recovering and knowing him he wants to be sure he can play to win the tournament 100%.»
Ivan Ljubicic added that the Maitre was not going to cut corners to resume competition, let alone at his age. «He will go step by step, because he is now 40 years old and he has to be patient. He can’t recover as fast as before», he recalled. Still, Federer’s appearances are increasingly rare (19 matches in the last two years).
