Barbara Haas’ hope for her first quarter-final on the WTA tour was not fulfilled on Thursday. In the round of 16 of the Hua Hin tournament in Thailand, the Upper Austrian was beaten by the Chinese Wang Xiyu 3: 6 4: 6 in strong wind gusts. The game had started optimally for Haas.

Austria’s number one had qualified for the second round of the WTA tour with a 3: 6 7: 5 6: 3 over the Japanese Chihiro Muramatsu for the second time in her career. However, in the fight for a place in the top eight, Haas found her master in Wang. The 18-year-old, who won the junior tournament in Wimbledon in 2018, used her third match ball after 1:37 hours. Wang, who eliminated Croatia’s Petra Martic, who was number two in the first round, is in a WTA quarter-finals for the first time.
Before that, Haas had started the game optimally. In the event of strong gusts of wind on the Gulf of Thailand, which repeatedly caused problems for both players, especially when serving, the 23-year-old took the first service from her Chinese opponent. It was the only highlight from the red-white-red point of view in the first sentence. However, Haas could not confirm the break and gave up her turn. Wang took command, then broke 4-2 and served the set after around 40 minutes.
In the second round it looked as if the decision would be made much faster. Haas gave up her first serve again and had to fend off breakballs again and again. At the 4-2 score for Wang, the Chinese made another break. The game seemed to be running for Haas. But the Upper Austrian showed fighters’ hearts, managed the rebreack and subsequently shortened to 4: 5 after she had fought off two match balls with her own serve. However, Wang did not miss the third chance and moved into the top eight for the first time in her career.
