Tencent buys Warframe and Gears Tactic creators

Tencent, the Chinese technology giant and the largest company in the video game industry, has just closed the acquisition of two major studios, specifically, the creators of Warframe and Gears Tactics.

The purchase was made for a sum of 1,500 million dollars, a figure for which they acquired all of Leyou Technologies, owners of Digital Extremes (Warframe) and Splash Damage (Gears Tactic).

The growth of Leyou Technologies is noteworthy. The company had been dedicated to meat processing and only since 2014 did they begin their foray into the video game when they bought Digital Extremes. In addition, in 2016, they bought Splash Damage, who would later collaborate with the multiplayer mode of Gears 5.

He also had a 20% stake in Certain Affinity, one of the studios that developed the Call of Duty Modern Warfare remaster in 2019, and also participated in Halo Infinite. Another of his achievements was the creation of Athlon Games, who made the MMO of The Lord of the Rings.

The range of video game studios and companies within Tencent is expanded one more with this purchase. The list already has 100% of Riot Games (creators of League of Legends), 40% of Epic Games (Fortnite), 11.5% de Bluehole (PUBG), 5% of Ubisoft, another 5% of Activision Blizzard and many other developers.

“In our many discussions with Tencent, it became clear that they not only believed in mission, but were also doing their best to allow and empower to know it. It will be a great new phase for our studio, with great ambitions for games. We couldn’t be more excited, ”said Richard Jolly, CEO and co-founder of Splash Damage.
