Ten new corona cases in St. Pauli: game in danger

Hamburg (dpa) – A corona outbreak is slowing down second division soccer club FC St. Pauli in the season finale. “Infection was detected in nine players and one member of the team environment,” said the club on Sunday. This is the result of PCR tests after several quick tests had been positive the day before. All those affected are therefore in domestic isolation. There is also captain Philipp Ziereis, who has not been available since Thursday due to a Covid 19 disease. Training was canceled on Saturday to be on the safe side. Hamburg played 1-1 against 1. FC Nürnberg on Friday.

“Of course, this outbreak comes at the absolute bad time so shortly before the season finale. It shows once again that the virus still poses a great risk despite all precautionary measures. We are in close consultation with the responsible authorities on this matter,” said sports director Andreas Bornemann . The club wants to do everything to ensure that Hamburg’s game against leaders Schalke 04 can take place next Saturday “and that we have a competitive team,” as Bornemann emphasized.
