Ten million people affected: Twice as many corona infections as flu cases

The continent has taken some control of the spread of the corona virus by taking hard steps from European countries. Worldwide, however, the number of infections and deaths continues to rise dramatically. China is now sending a signal of hope.

In Europe, the corona virus is at least considered to be contained – but the pandemic continues to spread worldwide. Around ten million infections with the virus are now known. Almost 500,000 people have died in connection with Sars-Cov-2. India, Brazil and the USA in particular continue to have high infection rates. In the meantime, the number of ten million people infected worldwide is roughly double the number of severe flu cases registered annually by the World Health Organization (WHO). The death rate in the approximately seven months of the corona pandemic roughly corresponds to the death rate from the flu in one year.

In the United States, Vice President Mike Pence canceled campaign events in the Corona hotspots of Arizona and Florida. They dropped out of “excessive caution,” said campaign team officials. The two states had recently reported new records for new infections. Nationwide, it rose by more than 40,000 on Saturday for the third day in a row. In the meantime, more than 2.5 million infections have been detected there. The number of known deaths exceeded 125,000, more than in any other country.

Brazil recently reported almost 40,000 newly infected people and now has a total of over 1.3 million cases. The number of deaths is given as 57,000. Russia speaks of around 635,000 infections and a good 9,000 deaths. However, doubts are repeatedly raised about this comparatively low death rate. The continent most affected by the pandemic is still Europe, where more than 2.6 million infections and almost 196,000 deaths have now been registered. There is still no medicine or vaccine against the pandemic.

At the international donation marathon, aid pledges totaling 6.15 billion euros were received at the weekend, as EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said. Germany promised 383 million euros. A total of 40 governments participated in the virtual summit. The billions are intended to advance the development of a vaccine against lung disease, among other things.

Chinese company CNBG, meanwhile, reported encouraging human test results with a coronavirus vaccine candidate. The results suggested that the vaccine could be safe and effective, China National Biotec Group (CNBG) said. The drug produced high-grade antibodies in all vaccinated subjects in the clinical trial, in which 1120 healthy people participated

In Germany, the number of infections has recently increased, mainly due to outbreaks in slaughterhouses. Bavaria announced large-scale tests in the industry: “A total of 33 other selected meat companies will be tested shortly. These include nine slaughterhouses, twelve cutting plants and twelve companies with a focus on the production of meat products and sausages,” said Health Minister Melanie Huml. One also wants to find out whether the high physical exertion or working in unfavorable climatic conditions represent further risk factors for an infection.
