Teleshopping King Horst Fuchs Dies at 77: Remember His Famous Spots

He was famous for being able to sell anything. Teleshopping king Horst Fuchs died this summer at the age of 77, his family announced this week. Fuchs gained the greatest fame in the 1990s and the following decade. Thanks to his advertising spots, where he unconventionally tested the products being sold – be it knives, vegetable cutters or car preparations – he became one of the iconic characters of television broadcasting. If you call now, you’ll get it absolutely free. One of the sentences that repeatedly sounded in teleshopping programs from the mouth of their uncrowned king Horst Fuchs. He never appeared in front of the camera without yellow or blue clothes, an iconic earring in his ear and a number of gold rings. He earned his reputation – when he was able to sell almost anything to the audience and his fans – mainly by testing the products offered, often very novel ones.

This year Horst Fuchs died in Vienna at the age of 77. His family did not release the news until mid-December. Even during his lifetime, Fuchs kept quiet about his privacy and did not like to give interviews.

Fourteen years ago, he made an exception for the Nova Víkend television program in the Czech media. “I have a kind of standard outfit that I’ve been wearing for many years, I’ve always had rings, I change watches accordingly fashion, according to the possibilities, to match my clothes. I exchanged my old earring for a slightly bigger one. I lost the small one that I had been wearing for a long time in the sea,” he said at the time.

The family kept the death of the legendary Horst Fuchs a secret for several months:

He was so successful in his work that he was even hired by the Austrian government to support its planned economic reform. “Tax reform is slowly taking shape. The government hired a well-known seller of teleshopping products, Horst Fuchs. He will use his many years of experience in selling products of varying quality to help convince the public of the need for reform,” the paper wrote nine years ago The daily press.

From car products to TV fame

Fuchs was born in 1946 in Frankfurt am Main. Originally worked in car manufacturer, but he showed his business talent in the late 1960s when he started selling in markets in the city. He then worked as a seller of car care products, founded a trading company and trained in it how to properly present the offered products, for example at exhibitions and fairs.

The real turning point in his career came in 1984 when he moved to Austria and joined forces with Werner Schleinzer from WS. At first, it was also engaged in direct sales here, but in 1993 WS International began broadcasting teleshopping programs, which gained the greatest popularity in the countries of the former Eastern Bloc – the former Czechoslovakiawhere Fuchs was dubbed by the actor Zdeněk Junák, or perhaps Bulgaria.

The advertising campaign with Adolf Hitler caused a stir:

And Fuchs became a celebrity in these states. “It had two reasons. The first was, of course, the virginity of the Eastern European market economy. Any things that were advertised on TV sold well. People were not used to products being described in such superlatives, and they watched teleshopping shows with real interest. The second reason was Horst’s appearance. He wasn’t like the perfect TV presenters, he looked like an ordinary person. Horst Fuchs was the king of Eastern Europe and thanks to him the Austrian company WS Teleshop built a real empire,” commented the website of Austrian radio FM4falling under the ORF station.

He will also sell his mother

Fuchs soon became known as a man who would sell anything, and there were even various rumors about him. “It was said that Horst Fuchs is able to sell his own mother – and if you call now, you can get a sister too. And it was also said that Fuchs is not a German, but a Bulgarian, who is just pretending to be a German in order to sell his products better,” FM4 radio recalled.

List The standard called Fuchs the forerunner of today’s influencers. Fuchs was not just a talking head, he often came up with his spots himself. And he often invited company to them – sometimes only hostesses, his connection with the champion in fast ironing Jitka von Truben was legendary.

Probably the most famous partner of Horst Fuchs was “Chef Tony” and the Austrian Josef “Pepi” Rössler. “Rössler took on the role of explaining how the products worked, and Fuchs was constantly amazed at the great knives and pans,” outlined Der Standard.

Slicer, knives and pomade for the car

It is difficult to evaluate which products offered by Horst Fuchs were the most popular, as he offered a number of them over the years (WS Teleshop went bankrupt in 2007).

Between the most legendary spots but the ones on the V-slicer or the show in which Fuchs set fire to the hood of an expensive car are ranked. And he allegedly burned his hand in the process.

Fuchs’ promotion of Schaum Fix Gold carpet cleaner was also famous. In one of the teleshopping shows, Fuchs tested the beater by having a carpet stepped on in a subway station and then cleaning it:
