It is less than ten meters that Seyit C. sits away from Matthias M. (56) and Maria W. (53). While Ruben’s parents look at the accused, he looks petrified to the ground.

“I’m really sorry that I brought misfortune to the family,” stammers the Turk, who is the father of a son himself. He doesn’t want to say more at the beginning of the trial.

It was February 12, 2019 at 7:22 p.m. when two people in a hurry met. Ruben, who wanted to catch a tram on Jahnallee that was already pulling into the stop on the central island. When it was red, he ran across the road.

And Seyit C., who initially drove behind the tram and then accelerated past on the right.

The student didn’t stand a chance. When the windscreen shattered on impact, the Mercedes was traveling at 87 km/h, as a Dekra expert found out from the on-board computer. In the clinic, Ruben succumbed to his massive injuries.

If the Mercedes driver had stuck to the 50 km/h speed limit in town, Ruben would still be alive today. At least that’s what the expert’s time calculations show.

“The boy would have run out of the vehicle contour and the accident would not have happened,” explained Dekra expert Peter Zicker.

Photos posted shortly after the accident – including one with his own son on the bonnet of the repaired car – make Ruben’s parents doubt the authenticity of the regret expressed in court. His Instagram account has now been cleaned up.

Even after the accident, Seyit C. still committed numerous speed violations according to the driving aptitude register. A second charge also accuses him of continuing to drive a car without a license – including with a fake Polish license.
