Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem – A World-Class Film Review

Review Mutated, pizza-devouring turtles who, thanks to the training of a rat, become masters of the martial arts. The inventors of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles also did not dare to dream that such a bizarre concept would grow into a world-class phenomenon. But it took a long time before it resulted in a successful cinema film. Until now.

Animation

In their early twenties, Americans Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird launched their idea in the 1980s as a parody of the popular youth comic books of the time. In an instant they were world famous and filthy rich. A successful cartoon series about the adventures of Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael soon appeared. Many filmmakers also brought the Turtles to the silver screen, but they all struggled too much with finding the right tone. It was either too childish or too dark.

The team behind the successful animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem does get that balance right. The turtles are teenagers for the first time (with voices of real teenagers) who struggle with their hormone balance and their place as misfits in the world. The foursome are forced to live in the sewer by their ‘father’ Splinter (a rat). Man, with his fear of the unknown, is an extremely unreliable species, is his understandable motivation.

But teenagers want nothing more than to be part of ‘ordinary’ society. When they secretly go above ground and encounter the criminal Superfly, who believes that mutants must force their acceptance if necessary, they see their chance to become national heroes. Also among those remarkable human beings. Their journey of discovery is accompanied by witty jokes about, among other things, the current superhero culture and the influence of social media.

Mutant Mayhem is also good on an audiovisual level. Just like the recent Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the good animation style, once determined by Disney, is done away with. It is as if we are looking at sketches that have come to life where we can still see the rough pencil lines. The new – and umpteenth – Turtles cinema production is therefore a pleasant film surprise in several respects. It crackles, dares to sand a bit and is moving.
