The iFixit teardown of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro has shown that many parts, such as the screen, the vibrator motor and the battery, are interchangeable between the two models. Apple seems to have compromised on several points in the design to integrate 5G.

Those downgrades seem to have been necessary as Apple added 5G to the iPhones, iFixit concludes. For example, the teardown confirms that the battery is smaller and no longer has an L-shape. The capacity, as it appeared earlier, is 2815mAh, smaller than the 3046mAh and 3110mAh batteries of the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro.

In addition, the vibration motor is a lot smaller. The Taptic Engine from the iPhone 12 models are 22.3×9.5×3.6mm, versus 26.9×11.2×3.4mm from the iPhone 11’s. It is unclear whether there are also internal differences between the vibrators. The speaker is in a rubber casing instead of glue and has a new shape, but iFixit has not published any dimensions.

The fact that the speakers are no longer glued is a benefit, according to iFixit, because it becomes easier to replace the battery of an iPhone. In addition, hobbyists should take into account that the iPhone 12s have a mirrored layout and therefore open from the other side.

The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro have few differences between them and therefore many parts, including the screen, the battery and the vibration motor, seem interchangeable. At the place where the iPhone 12 Pro has the cool sensor, there is a plastic on the iPhone 12 to fill the space. The American iPhone 12 also has several mmWave antennas for 5G, which are not included in the European version. The difference can be seen through a hole on the side, which looks like a button. Apple charges the same price for both models, despite the fact that mmWave hardware is expensive and costs an additional 100 dollars or euros for other brands.
