This is the first victory for Luna Rossa of Team Prada Pirelli. The Italian sailboat edged out its main New Zealand opponent by just seven seconds. “We followed our plan, kept our cool and the boat did the rest”, said Jimmy Spithill, Luna Rossa’s Australian skipper, after equalizing his crew. “It’s great to be competitive.”

It was in Auckland Bay, under a cloudy sky and light wind that the skippers set out for this second regatta. The New Zealand sailor easily won the first regatta with 31 seconds ahead of the Italian challenge. But for this second step, he got ahead: “We looked a little rusty on this last one (regatta). It’s no secret that we haven’t raced for a long time”, said Peter Burling, skipper of Team New Zealand, “and the slightest mistake is paid in cash”.

Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa are now tied for 1 wins everywhere after the first two America’s Cup races. The N.3 and N.4 regattas of the 36th America’s Cup, which are held in the best of 13 rounds, will take place on Friday.
