The President of the German Teachers’ Association fears that the federal and state refugee summit will not provide satisfactory answers to the acute integration problems in schools. He sees the danger “that the subject of schools will be completely lost in the hiccups surrounding the cost shares of the federal and state governments,” said Heinz-Peter Meidinger of the editorial network Germany (RND/Wednesday editions). A comprehensive and long-term concerted plan of action is needed instead of disputes on the backs of those affected.

The feedback from schools showed that the modest integration successes of the past decades with children with a migration background are currently being squandered again. If, according to the current primary school study, refugee children in the fourth grade are up to two years behind in learning compared to the average, then this is “a very bad omen for their future educational, life and participation opportunities,” warned Meidinger.

The growing proportion of young people from immigrant families with school dropout rates is also not a good sign. “According to the German Teachers’ Association, a great joint effort would be necessary to provide the schools with the financial and human resources that successful integration needs,” said Meidinger.
