‘Task force’ now does recommend using masks

Contrary to the information that had been previously published, the medical task force that works the coronavirus COVID-19 in Puerto Rico, recommended that citizens wear some type of mask when leaving the home.

Justifying the change in position, the group of experts issued statements to invite people who do not have a commercial mask to manufacture it at their residence.

“It is recommended that the population use some type of covering for the nose and mouth when they leave their homes. Those who have approved masks can use them, taking into consideration prudence and avoiding their waste in view of the great scarcity that exists,” they expressed. in a document published on the group’s Facebook page.

On the suggestion to the public to manufacture a type of face covering, these experts indicated that the material of the same should be fabric, polyester cotton or nylon, since they could be reusable and washable.

However, they made the warning that these masks should not be used for more than two hours, and will only be used when leaving the home.

Why the change of posture with the masks?

1) Countries where the mandatory use of equipment to cover the nose and mouth when people leave the home have been reported to have decreased the contagion curve.

2) Unlike other respiratory virus epidemics, in the COVID-19 pandemic carriers without symptoms or with mild symptoms have an essential role in spreading the virus to the healthy population.

3) Approved face masks, homemade masks, or the like may not only protect healthy people from acquiring the virus, but may decrease the amount of virus particles that carriers with or without mild symptoms expel into the environment.

4) Various scientific investigations are currently being carried out to validate whether the use of approved masks, home-made masks or similar objects is helpful or not to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but obtaining conclusive results could take several months.

5) The COVID-19A pandemic is advancing rapidly in Puerto Rico and we need to incorporate all the strategies that may be of benefit to our population.
