Jezebel Reports that rapper Talib Kweli is suing the site for $300,000 in damages, claiming they caused it “emotional distress” for publishing an article titled “Talib Kweli’s harassment campaign shows how unprotected black women are online and offline” in 2020. The article details the rapper’s harassment of a 24-year-old woman, Maya A. Moody; He sent hundreds of tweets about her, causing her followers to harass Moody as well. He was also permanently suspended from Twitter due to harassment.

Two years after the play’s publication, Kweli filed a lawsuit against Jezebel’s parent company, G/O Media, and the play’s author, Ashley Reese, last week. The site claimed that Kweli could have sued them for defamation, but the statute of limitations had passed last year. She has filed a lawsuit pro se, which means that she is suing on her own behalf and not through an attorney. Kweli claimed that the play described him as “a monster who didn’t like black women” and cited her song “Brown Skin Lady” as evidence to the contrary.

A spokesperson for G/O Media issued a statement about the lawsuit Tuesday afternoon: “Jezebel’s article fairly recounted the controversy that led to the permanent suspension of Talib Kweli’s Twitter account. This lawsuit, filed two years after the story was published, is without merit and the company will seek our attorneys’ fees in accordance with the protections afforded to the press to publish stories on matters of public interest such as this.” Jezebel concluded by reiterating that they stick to his original story. Vulture approached Kweli to comment on the process.

“Introvert. Problem solver. Total fan of pop culture. Independent student. Creator”.
