Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen resigns from the presidency of the country’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party and confirms his responsibility for his defeat in local elections.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen resigned as leader of the country’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party on Saturday, after suffering a defeat in local elections.
“The election results have not come as we expected,” Tsai told reporters. Tsai will remain president of the autonomous island.
And as the day begins, Polling stations in Taiwan are closedin a local election that President Tsai described as a message to the world about the island’s determination to defend itself against China.
However, elections for mayors, county heads and local council members are tied to domestic issues such as the “Covid-19” pandemic and crime, and the winners will have no say in addressing Chinese politics.
While the election results are an important measure of popular support for the island’s two main parties, they cannot necessarily be taken as an indicator of the upcoming 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
