Hefei, Anhui received its first snowfall this winter on the evening of the 15th. It is warm and cozy in the Xin Chuan Tea Study Room in Luyang District, Hefei City. The owner of the study room, Zhu Rongzhi, a professor of Chinese studies in Taiwan, is making final preparations for the second lecture of “The Doctrine of the Mean”.

The reporter learned from interviews that the attendees came from all walks of life. It was time to get off work, and they entered the study one after another, discussing work and study matters with Zhu Rongzhi from time to time.

Entering the Xin Chuan Tea Study Room, a strong flavor of traditional Chinese culture hits your face. The first characters of the couplets on both sides of the huge portrait of Confucius are the origin of the name of the study room “Xin Chuan” – “The fire of Xin Chuan inherits five thousand years of excellent traditional culture, and the study of Taoism The ancient sages established virtues and meritorious services.” This is also Zhu Rongzhi’s life pursuit for more than 50 years of preaching and teaching.

Zhu Rongzhi was born in Taiwan in 1949. His father died of illness when he was three years old. His mother and six brothers and sisters lived a difficult life. With the help and encouragement of his uncle, he successfully passed the Chinese Language and Literature Department of National Taiwan Normal University. Since then, his studies and career have been going smoothly. , master’s classes, doctoral classes, stay at the school to teach until retirement at the age of 55. Later, he was transferred to Taiwan Yuanpei University of Medical Science and Technology where he taught for 10 years. At the age of 65, Zhu Rongzhi retired for the second time.

Also after his second retirement, Zhu Rongzhi was invited to Hefei to attend the Mencius academic seminar and decided to stay in mainland China. I have lived in Hefei for more than 10 years. Because I study, teach and research Chinese studies, I am often invited to give lectures in universities and enterprises in Anhui.

Zhu Rongzhi said: “Culture is the root and soul of our Chinese nation. We are very lucky to have received a very complete traditional cultural education since we were young. At that time, Taiwan attached great importance to Chinese culture. The common school mottos of our elementary, junior high and high schools are etiquette, justice, integrity and shame. Loyalty, filial piety, benevolence, faith and peace are the so-called four dimensions and eight virtues.”

In Zhu Rongzhi’s view, with the enhancement of economic strength and the improvement of people’s material life, mainland China now attaches great importance to the inheritance and development of traditional culture, especially cultural self-confidence. “As a member of cultural inheritance, of course we must do our best. this matter”.

Zhu Rongzhi said frankly that from an academic point of view, he is more focused on Confucianism, and he likes Mencius’s spirit of “doing my duty without mercy” the most. This courageous and responsible spirit is what he has worked hard for throughout his life.

Talking about the Taiwan authorities’ “de-Sinicization” curriculum issue, Zhu Rongzhi said: “We are all very sad. The mainland is promoting traditional culture, while the other side wants to ‘de-Sinicize’. This is of course not good. DPP For the sake of selfish interests, the curriculum has been changed. The reduction of traditional cultural courses has had a huge impact on the understanding of our traditions and the next generation of children.”

“What do I often say about Taiwanese? The so-called Taiwanese are the Chinese living in Taiwan. Because today’s reunification of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait must rely on cultural identity, so Ma Ying-jeou and Lian Shengwen come to the mainland to worship their ancestors. I think it is the most important thing to do. Correct, because the characteristic of our Chinese culture is family culture and inheritance.”

In Zhu Rongzhi’s view, the inheritance of culture requires the participation of more young people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, because the country’s hope lies with young people, and young people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait must understand and accept each other. This is the blessing of the country. Teachers are very important for the cultural cultivation of the younger generation. We must have good teachers to cultivate the next generation on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Zhu Rongzhi believes that when talking about Chinese studies today, we do not mean to be like the ancients today, but to use the past for the present, to turn the wisdom of the ancients into the life nourishment of modern people, and to interpret the wisdom of the ancients in today’s language, so that it can be accepted. “What’s the use of learning “The Doctrine of the Mean” and “The Great Learning”? We need to let our children know it, and then they will learn it with heart. We need to let our children know the value of learning this, and then we need to have methods in teaching.”

Today, Zhu Rongzhi, who is seventy years old, has written more than 70 books and is still writing four articles every day. He said: “It is a very important responsibility to be able to spread what you have learned throughout your life to more people to benefit from it. People will eventually grow old, but when their salary is exhausted, they will pass on the fire.” (End)
