Taiwan can make chips in Eastern Europe

Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Lithuania are potential partners

Taiwan is considering co-operating with Brussels to open a new chip factory in Europe. The factory can be built in Slovakia, the Czech Republic or Lithuania.

Kung Ming-hsin, who heads Taiwan’s National Development Council, said he had visited the three Eastern European countries and was very interested in setting up a joint venture.

Taiwan is home to TSMC, one of the world’s largest chip makers. It was founded by the Taiwanese state in the late 80’s and today has leading positions.

The export of part of the production will lead to an increase in its final volume. The benefits for Slovakia, the Czech Republic or Lithuania would also be great. Taipei has already promised scholarships to train new staff in Taiwan.
