Taiwan Blesses A Domestic Covid-19 Vaccine Emergency Permit

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Government Taiwan issue an emergency use permit (EUA) for one corona vaccine (Covid-19) made in the country made by the pharmaceutical company Medigen, and the results are claimed to be not inferior to the vaccine made by AstraZeneca.

However, the Taiwanese government does not want to disclose the results of the second phase of clinical trials of the Medigen vaccine, especially data on efficacy. They claim the Medigen vaccine is able to trigger the production of antibodies in the body which is almost similar to the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Reported by Reuters, Taiwan’s Ministry of Health claims that so far there have been no major problems in clinical trials of the Medigen vaccine.

It’s just that they require Medigen to provide a vaccine safety report officially named MVC-COV1901 every month.

According to reports, the Medigen vaccine is designed for people over the age of 20. Meanwhile, the distance between the injection of the first and second doses of the Medigen vaccine is set for 28 days.

Taiwan’s Health Minister, Chen Shih-chung, said after the government approved the emergency permit, it was hoped that the pharmaceutical company would immediately ramp up vaccine production.

“There should be a supply of vaccines from them in August,” Chen said.

Chen said the Taiwanese government urged Medigen to provide a report on the vaccine’s efficacy within one year after the Phase III clinical trial period was completed.

Medigen collaborates with the United States National Institutes of Health in conducting research on vaccines made using the recombinant protein method.

The Taiwanese government last May signed a vaccine procurement cooperation contract with Medigen and another domestic pharmaceutical company, UBI Pharma, for five million doses each. However, emergency clearance for UBI Pharma’s vaccines has not yet been approved.

Taiwan’s move to approve the use of domestically made Covid-19 vaccines is considered a major step to reduce dependence on imported vaccines. So far, they have imported the Covid-19 vaccine from various world pharmaceutical manufacturers, namely Moderna Inc., and AstraZeneca.

Taiwan also buys vaccines through the COVAX cooperation scheme.

Covid-19 cases in Taiwan are now reported to be under control after a spike in May.
