Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance Heir and Chief Conductor Chen Tak Fai Passed Away – RTHK

The heir and chief director of Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance, Chen Tak Fai has passed away. The “Tai Hang Fire Dragon Cultural Center” said on its social media page that Chen Dehui passed away yesterday. The museum is deeply saddened and expresses deep condolences to Chen Dehui’s family.

The custom of the fire dragon dance in Tai Hang has a history of more than 100 years and was declared a national intangible cultural heritage in 2011. Chen Dehui is the heir of the fire dragon dance. According to the cultural center, Chen Tak-fai, born in Tai Hang, dedicated his life to promoting the fire dragon activities of the Mid-Autumn Festival. He participated in the fire dragon dance at the age of 15 and is became chief conductor at the age of 23. More than 50 years have passed since then.

Yang Runxiong, director of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, expressed his sadness, condolences and regret over the passing of Chen Dehui and extended his deep condolences to his family.

Yang Runxiong said that Chen Dehui has actively led the fire dragon dance activities for many years, has introduced the younger generation to this precious intangible cultural heritage, and has successfully passed on traditional Chinese culture from generation to generation.
