Syberia RS: Terrain conversion of the Porsche 911

Kai Burkhard did not necessarily have an eye on the mainstream when he was flirting with the purchase of a fun car. It almost became a Humvee, but the military primitive has a flaw: Sense is at 80 km / h! This ultimately led to the idea of the Syberia RS, a Porsche 911 for all cases.

Implementation began with the purchase of a 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 in collector’s condition, which Kai brought from Japan. This was followed by the first design drafts, later the modification of the wheel cutouts and manufacture of the fender flares, the installation of a solid roll cage as a life-saving measure and the implementation on the topic of “truck tires on Fuchs rims” (in 16 inch format), a chapter in itself alone.

The body mixes metal and carbon, technically a limited slip differential and a short-ratio manual transmission of the Porsche type 915 are used. A winch can pull up to 3.5 tons.

Countless other jobs took months. The interior was also redesigned in line with the ideas of Kai. Here, Alcantara is used across the board.

When it came to perfecting traction, dynamics and driving comfort, the “Tailor-Made” department at H&R Spezialfedern came into play. However, after thorough investigation, the series chassis of the 911 did not provide a basis for meeting the client’s demands.

The development engineers released the standard torsion bar springs of the Porsche into the scrap metal and built a completely new chassis geometry. Spring-mounted shock absorbers with variable height adjustment, which have been made to order, are now replacing the torsion bars and have been adjusted to the immense suspension travel.

This was accompanied by the construction of special spring plates and support bearings, RS stabilizers ensure the necessary directional stability and specify driving behavior. The result of the final test drives met with total enthusiasm. H&R has already received several inquiries about the chassis reproduction of the Burkhard-911.

Incidentally, off-road 911s actually existed ex works, but for motorsport. At the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally, a Porsche 911 specially modified for this competition, the Carrera 4 × 4 (Porsche 953), started and won. As a special feature, all-wheel drive was installed in a 911 for the first time. In 1986 the Porsche 961, a rally version of the 959, won the Paris-Dakar.
