Swiss Ski Team Faces Pressure in World Cup Giant Slalom

– The decision begins – the Swiss have to make significant improvements

Published today at 10:15 am

1:41 p.m

Expectations were high for the Canadian when he made his World Cup debut 13 years ago. Read rides consistently, but only consistently at the top of the world. It was never enough for the top 5 in his career, he lacks a bit of the daredevil or all-out attack gene. In the second run he drove as usual: unspectacular and controlled. And so the result is intermediate rank 4.

1:40 p.m

The Italian is taking part in the decision in Adelboden for the first time. And as he swings down at the finish, speaker Sepp Odermatt shouts: “Best time!” Kastlunger wins World Cup points for the fourth time ever.

1:38 p.m

He also amazed in the first run: With number 60 he made it into the decision. The Frenchman is in good form and recently shone in the European Cup with a giant slalom victory. And he also has talent in other areas: he was once a European water skier champion. In Adelboden, however, he made a few mistakes in his decision and fell back to 5th position.

1:36 p.m

Two Croatians qualified for the decision. Istok Rodes is one of them. And the 26th from Madonna di Campiglio will get World Cup points again, he even takes the lead with a lead of three tenths.

1:35 p.m

His World Cup debut? Over 15 years ago. His only victory? 2015 in Adelboden. Stefano Gross is still not allowing himself to be pushed out of the Italian team by the next or even the generation after that; he even became national champion last spring. Now we go back a few steps: Gross loses a lot of time and is at the bottom of the rankings. Oh yes: Gross is the most loyal soul in skiing: he has been using the same ski brand (Völkl) since 1998.

1:34 p.m

River Radamus is not a slalom specialist. But that didn’t stop the US bird of paradise from qualifying for the second run with start number 70 (!). And he has a really strong performance. He takes five tenths off his teammate Ritchie. The previous day’s 4th place in the giant slalom – his best result in the World Cup – seems to inspire him.

1:32 p.m

No matter which coach you ask, wonderful things are always said about the American. In 2021 he became junior world champion in slalom, but he has not been able to establish himself in the World Cup since then. At least there are points again in Adelboden. He takes the lead, nine hundredths ahead of Salarich.

1:31 p.m

Spain is also represented in this second round. Joachim Salarich opens up about Adelboden’s decision. His supervisors cheer in the finish area; it will soon become clear how much his time of 56.23 was worth.

1:25 p.m

A year ago there was a Norwegian double victory thanks to Lucas Braathen and Atle Lie McGrath. And now it looks like the triumph in the Stangenwald will once again lead to Norway. After the first run, Alexander Steen Olsen is surprisingly in the lead, with McGrath lurking just five hundredths behind.

On the Swiss side, anything is possible – from a coup to a debacle. Six Swiss are represented in this second run: Ramon Zenhäuser, Marc Rochat, Daniel Yule, Luca Aerni, Tanguy Nef and Loïc Meillard. But only Zenhäuser (three tenths behind third place) can really hope for a podium finish after the first round. Unless, of course, someone manages a miracle run.

1:21 p.m

The second run hasn’t even started yet, but fences are already being dismantled and barriers removed in certain places. In addition, the large parking lot around 200 meters from the finish area is emptying, and various trainers are already on their way to Wengen. There is no time to waste either. And the cold (minus 3 degrees) doesn’t necessarily invite you to linger. Even at a ski race, not everyone treats themselves to something hard.

1:16 p.m

We’ll report back from Chuenisbärgli. Fortunately, the visibility seems to be slightly better when looking up at the mountain.

We hope you had a good meal. We enjoyed ourselves with Wienerli and bread and now, freshly strengthened, we hit the keys again. And of course we are pleased that you are following the decision in the slalom on this channel.

11:48 a.m

The last riders are still swinging down through the forest of poles; they are unlikely to turn the rankings upside down. That’s why we’re logging off for our lunch break. We wish you good luck and hope that you will follow the decision in the Adelboden slalom with us again.

The live ticker on this channel starts at 1:15 p.m.

11:45 a.m

The Norwegians put their stamp on this first run from Adelboden. Alexander Steen Olsen leads ahead of Atle Lie McGrath. Surprisingly, third is the Italian Tommaso Sala.

The Swiss performance can be classified between decent and inadequate. Marc Rochat was really good for his standards in ninth place. Ramon Zenhäuser (8th) can still at least have slight hopes of a podium place, 0.65 seconds behind the leader.

Daniel Yule (11th), Luca Aerni (15th), Tanguy Nef (19th) and Loïc Meillard (21st) will also be represented in the second race. The man from Neuchâtel in particular is experiencing a setback after his failure in the giant slalom. This time the tie holds, but he – the greatest Swiss hope in the slalom – continually loses time, in the end it is 1.77 seconds to leader Steen Olsen.

11:35 a.m

The man from Zug is already 24, but today he is racing in his first World Cup race. The premiere should have taken place in Val-d’Isère a month ago, but the slalom in Savoy had to be canceled due to precarious piste conditions. Iten, whose parents are trainers in a ski club, used to suffer from back problems for a long time. Now he’s feeling better – and yet he’s eliminated shortly before the finish. That was it for the Swiss in the first run.

11:34 am

The 25-year-old Frenchman, son of former Slalom World Cup winner Sébastien Amiez, shows that fast times are still possible. He is in 18th place.

11:32 a.m

The Bernese is not dissatisfied with his first run. «I thought I had lost more time at the top, but the last section was good. But I can do even better and hope that I can turn it up in the second run,” he says in the SRF interview.

11:28 a.m

The seventh of eight Swiss is now traveling to Adelboden. But he doesn’t reach the goal. On a steep slope, he first has to put the skis sideways before he threads them in.

11:25 a.m

Only two slaloms have been held so far, and there are still ten races on the program until the end of the season. Things are finally getting serious for the pole acrobats, and if you’re not ready now, you can take off the classics: Adelboden, Wengen, Kitzbühel, Schladming – climax after climax will follow in the next two and a half weeks.

11:25 a.m

The man from Geneva can boast ranks 20 and 19 this season. He is in 18th place, 1.75 seconds behind. It’s a decent performance.

The leader from Norway says: “It’s the first time that I’m in the lead after a first run – it’s a pretty funny experience. I feel really good, like I have everything under control.”
